Being a mother is hard enough of a job, being a mother of two girls is harder but being the mother of a “pre-teen” is the hardest because they’re not quite old enough to do what everyone else is doing, yet not young enough to sit and snuggle on the couch watching the Wizard of Oz with you.
I’ve recently began letting Drama Queen get on the computer for more than school work related things. She’s all into disneychannel.com and the games/features it has keeps her occupied (safely) for hours if I let her. She also has a BFF (our neighbor girl who is the sweetest thing ever) that is a couple of years older and has began guiding her into “cool” stuff like the right book bag for school and how to straighten her hair (because if you’ve ever seen me I have NO clue when it comes to straight hair! lol).
Last night I set Drama Queen up with her own email account so she can email with family and a couple of friends. You should’ve seen the giddiness in that child, you would’ve thought someone told her she didn’t ever have to go back to school! lol There were rules set, of course, no changing her password and I let her know that Mister and I would be checking her account randomly. Oh and before she asked I told her NO Myspace!
Sometimes its hard for me to let go of total control and allow her to make her own decisions but she’s ten years old and I know its a matter of time before she asks to go to the mall with her friends (NO!) or starts getting phone calls. It doesn’t get easier with time, does it?

FYI: Make sure she knows your email address. (Just don’t let her know why)
My kids try to set up fun accounts all the time (like to Pokemon or Webkins) but the websites ask for your parents email address for permission. My kids actually enter in my email address so I know exactly what they are doing.
My oldest one try to set up a myspace account when he was at Grandma’s this summer. Silly boy got in trouble because he thought he was being sneaky and they sent me a notification.

It does get easier. It’s just getting past all the “firsts” that’s hard.

No it doesn’t get easier. But you’ve laid a great foundation for those girls and that is the most important part.

I second what Lori said.
The foundation I’m laying for my girls is a room with 4 inch thick concrete surrounding it and bars on the windows….

It sounds like you’re starting her off on the right foot. She’ll learn how to be responsible with stuff like that so hopefully once the other things come along she’ll continue to be responsible

I’m going to be so lost. I was getting phone calls when I was 7 and I had a real “boyfriend” for 9 whole months when I was 10. Things sure have changed but you obviously know what you are doing.

B has had an email account for a while, but mostly because we school at home so she can contact her teacher and other kids in the same virtual school. She mostly emails my mom, Mr. FixIt and me, lol, with “Hi mom, hope you are having a good day” and we email from room to room-ha! She has had a Webkinz so we’ve been on that craze for a few months. She and monster man get on Nick.Jr (he can by himself, I can hear it, I know where he is, LOL)and some school sites. Amazing what they want to do and CAN do compared to what we did at that age. You’re right, a bit scary too!!
