Last night I filled out ALL the beginning of the year paperwork the school needs for my kids, almost two hours worth. Among the required paperwork was the district policies that I had to read to see if there were any changes and I came across something that pissed me off.
There was a section on attendance, naturally. Can you believe they do not accept illness as an excused absence. Nor do they accept a doctor’s note as an excused absence the way they use to. Basically, according to our school district, there is NO excuse for a child to miss school.
Excuse me?
Yeah, even sick kids aren’t excused from school Oh that explains a lot.
The packet suggested, and I shit you not, that when our kids are sick to send them to school for a few hours so the school can still get funds for the children.
Can you believe that shit?
My kids have never spent a day in any sort of day care or pre-k facility. While Mister and I worked they were with my grandma, next door to us. She only watched our girls and my niece. Because of our babysitting arrangement my girls were hardly ever sick. They weren’t around a bunch of kids so when they entered kindergarten almost immediately they began coming down with colds, what seemed like monthly! At first I thought it was just Drama Queen but when The Snitch started school, last year, I saw the same thing happened.
That’s when I put two and two together.
When Drama Queen was almost finished with kindergarten Mister and I received a threatening notice from the district that if she missed one more day of school we would be brought up in front of the district school board for review. Scared we sent her to school, sick or not, until the end of the year. Now the same thing has happened with The Snitch.
This past January The Snitch got real sick one weekend. I kept her home Monday and Tuesday but sent her back on Wednesday, even though she still wasn’t feeling well, poor thing. She was coughing and miserable. About twenty-five minutes into my work day I wasn’t surprised when the nurse called me to pick her up.
There I go taking a sick day and leaving work less than an hour in.
I took her to the doctor to find out my baby girl had walking pneumonia! They gave her an in office breathing treatment in addition to a few antibiotics and an asthma medication for her breathing. I got a note to keep her out the remainder of the week. Immediately I took the note to school, collected her homework and thought all was well.
It wasn’t.
At the end of the year I got her attendance info and they had her marked as unexcused even with a doctor’s note. And now Mister and I have been summoned to the school, next month, to meet with a representative from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office!
I’m so pissed.
When I went to one of The Snitch’s award ceremonies I was surprised that they gave perfect attendance awards to kindergartners! I thought to myself What Kindergartners can make perfect attendance? Now I know, the ones who’s parents send them to school sick and end up getting my kids sick!
I know school budgets have been cut. I know this. I know its important for our kids to go to school. I know this. But how much does a sick five year old learn in the thirty minutes they are there when they’re coughing and feverish? Not much. We’re not like the neighborhood welfare mothers who have kids to keep a steady state pay check coming into their homes. (And trust me, I’m not dogging mother’s on welfare, its just that I know one of these who is currently pregnant with her SIXTH child who doesn’t work and is rapping the state for money!) WE WORK and because we work we only get so much time off with pay. Eventually my employer will get sick of me taking off thirty minutes after arriving so I can pick my child up when I dropped her off at school KNOWING she was sick. My children’s health has to come before any fucken state funds!
My dad tells me Fuck them your kids are sick and its your first priority to do what is best for them so you keep them home. So here I am, now, armed with attitude and ready to take on the fucken Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office!
Rant over.

No fucking way! Nope. I will not and never will do that. I don’t care if they fine my ass. My children (when I get some) will come first. If it is that bad, I’ll homeschool them.
Man, that pisses me off!

You get’em girl!
That’s freakin’ crazy, seriously.

Bittersweet Confusion
It makes ME sick that the administration would put children’s health at risk in order to get funding. Why not but salmonella into the bake sale cupcakes while they are at it.
Fight girl fight!

Wait until they have an outbreak of some disease in the school. They they will change their tune. That is just freaking stupid.

I’m right there with you. I’d even go as far as calling the doctor’s office and asking them for copies of the documentation that they suggested she stay out when she was sick. Health IMO is more important. ugh That pisses me off for you.

You need to get your state medical association involved. This is totally wrong. Exposing children to even more illness…sheesh!!

What?! That’s fucken ridiculous. To me the school policy is not only recommending, but requiring, parents to commit child abuse. Seriously, that is the kind of shit that will get your kids taken away from you in most states.
Dude, if they give you any shit, make sure to throw that out there. I bet there’s a lawyer somewhere in the state of California who’d like to make a name (and possible political career) for him/herself by suing the school system for encouraging parents to commit child abuse.

Carrie, trust me I am pissed off.
Slick, its a good thing level headed Mister will be w/me at that meeting.
Bittersweet, they have a fight coming.
Karen, sadly, that’s what it might have to come down to.
T, I already told Mister if I have to I will pay to get copies of her medical records and dr. note. I’m not going to take this shit from them.
Trish, I know its wrong that’s why I’m so hot over the issue! GRRR!
Sue, oohh good one! Yeah Child Abuse is what I’m calling it from now on! Fuckers.

I know first hand how hard it is when you’re a woking mother with a sick child. Many times I had to make the choice to send my child to school not feeling well or piss my boss off again. I hated it. Now I’m a teaching assistant in an elementary school and our district does not want sick kids in school. Certainly there are kids out there who rule the roost at home and if they don’t want to go to school, they don’t or the kid whose mother worked at the zoo and often took him to work with her rather than send them to school. It’s a pain when parents send their kids in with strep throat, ear infections, stomach bugs, and bad colds. It does nothing but spread germs to the other students and adults in the classroom. It does put the child behind the rest of the class when they have frequent absences but what kind of school district puts a child’s health before their state aid? How many days have your girls missed?

Jay, don’t put ideas into my head. Hmmm…
Summer, I can tell you right now, my kids do not rule! lol When they’re sick & stay home their day isn’t filled with fun stuff. No, Mister puts them back to bed, in their room, w/o TV, naps are a must as well is reading. Yeah my kids don’t like to stay home unless they’re really sick & need rest.
Um I want to say due to The Snitch having the walking pneumonia in Jan she was out a full 5 days so that maybe brought her up to a total of 12 days of school missed in 9 months. I know 12 days is a lot of school to miss but she REALLY WAS SICK.

That is absolutely fucking ridiculous!! Speaking from the teacher’s perspective, if your kid is sick KEEP THEM HOME!! They spread germs to me and everyone else. I don’t want to get ill because you sent your kid to school.
Tell your district that a child’s health comes before state aid. A child cannot learn if they are feverish, nauseous or coughing. And that child will stay sicker longer if they’re required to be at school when they need to rest. I understand that they lose state aid because of tons of absences but when there is a doctor’s note stating the child has something serious like pneumonia it should be considered an excused absence.

Noooo way! I would be soo pissed. I hope you still have that Dr’s note. Make them pay your lost wages for the day you have to go to court, and then raise holy hell cuz it’s a fuckin waste of time! I would be pissed too. Never will I send my son to school when I know he’s not feeling well. That’s bullshit, and like you said…that’s how these kids keep passing the funk back and forth. Keep them home, that’s a trip.
Anyway…thanks for stopping by my blog earlier. I’ll def be back to check in on ya!

I would assume that if the State School Board or possibly even your school district office (if this isn’t a district-wide suggestion/policy) would find out that the school is telling people to send sick kids to school in order to get their MONEY, which basically equals fraud, they would be LIVID! Yes, they want/need money, but they can’t FORCE your child to school throwing up or worse contagious to “get their money.” What a load of BS!
I can see them going after seriously truant kids who disrupt and strain the system by barely being there, but a rule for everyone?? Please. Kids are gonna get sick, you can’t help it… and sickness will only be WORSE by them enforcing this. Yeah, makes a lot of sense…freakin’ dipshits.
They shouldn’t be bitching about her missing a few days for pneumonia- she could have been out a full week or more!
That is just nuts!! You have my sympathies (and I’ll pass you some red-hair fired up anger) to deal with that shit.

BTW- I second Jay’s suggestion!! And round up some family, friends and several parents to go with you!

I work at a school and I have NEVER heard of such a thing! That is just crazy! The whole idea of a doctor’s excuse is……THE EXCUSE part!
Where I work the days missed with doctor’s notes are not added into the total that could retain a child.
That stinks!

And good for you! Are you kidding – that is the utmost in stupidity – and just horrible!
See, if it were me, I’d whip them out of that school so fast – do you have any other options for public schools?

I agree with you dad…its the same here…we have 5 excused absences and that is it…I’m fighting with the Pediatric Dept now for my damn excuse from last week and have the school crawling down my back too…..its a pain in the ass. If I had any patience I may homeschool.

Thanks for all the support, peeps. It really helps to know that its not just ME who’s being a bitch or think that whole policy is ridiculous! And can you believe I can’t find my copy of the friggen policy! Ugh. So off to the school I go today begging for a copy. lol I want to have that shit handy and be armed with it when I go to that meeting, next month.
In the end it comes down to this: my kids are sick = they’re staying home. Bite me.
Oh & someone asked, no we don’t have other schooling options, its a district wide policy. And we’ve got no grounds to request another district. So unless we put their asses in Catholic school (and I couldn’t do THAT to them) then we’re stuck here. lol
Hallie, we bring our baby home tonight when I get out of work! Woohoo!

This is the crap that the school system does that pisses me off. I could understand if it is a teen missing school and the parent doesn’t know but a 5 year old? What the hell do they think the kid is doing? Hanging out at the bar? they are home with Mom or Dad. It IS all about money. That makes me sick.
August 28, 2008 at 6:58am

Forgot to say that our school nurse told us to bring the kids in to her and she will release them. So I have to get my sick kid up and haul her to school for some under qualified woman to tell me she has a fever.

Zephra, you’re kidding? That sucks. If we were to do that here then I’d be late for work b/c the office doesn’t even open until 7:30!

Good Rant! This one is worthy of the Hurt Locker! Its a shame, but it will take that one family to have their child Die in school from illness to repeal this stupid rule! I am glad to hear that you are in no way seriously considering to obey them. If the kids are sick…the kids are sick. They should be the first priority…..

Um, yeah. I’m pretty sure there’s a lawsuit there. Somehow. Says the law student.
I would fight that one tooth and nail. If my kid is sick, he stays home, and usually gets an extra day on top of the sick day just to make sure he’s really ready to go when he gets back. GIve me a break people…

they are not your kids. you are just a breeder for the system.
let me corrct one peice of misinformation: school budgets have not been cut. nowhere.
when the school send home info about cuts, what they really mean are not cuts in your langguage or mine, but reductions in the funding increases that they asked for/were hoping to get.
the money they need to keep paying the teachesrs exorbitant retiremnet plans and pay janitors 50K a year. and many of the the district officials have there families working in these gravy jobs that pay big for little skills.

As a teacher I’ve never heard anything so ridiculous. In the UK we have a policy of ASKING parents to keep children away from school for 24 hours AFTER anything infectious such as vomiting etc so we don’t have illness rife in schools.

Seriously, the only way to really make those STUPID, IDIOTIC admins listen is to make a big ole bunch of noise. Throw a huge group fit and be loud enough and somebody’s got to take notice.
Right? How come even I’m not convinced? Well, regardless….go fight, girl.
