This afternoon I took advantage of Mister vacuuming, The Snitch sleeping in another room and Drama Queen being in her room alone.
I just went in, sat on her bed and asked her if she heard her friends talking of starting their period or knew what a period meant. As I suspected, she was clueless.
The talk went well, I was informative and gave her details of what to look for in the changes her body will be making soon. I told her how to use a pad, then took her to the bathroom to show her an actual pad and how it works. I told her I was on my period and its not a big deal, its just life and we go through it from young to old. I let her ask questions, and the only one she was most concerned of is When in August will I have it? Will it be at the beginning of the month? LMAO Her birthday is the beginning of August and we’re having a pool party for her. You see her concern? lol I ended our talk by assuring her that Mister and I are here for her, if she has any more questions never to be embarrassed and just ask us, that’s what we’re here for.
Whew. I’m glad that is over with! Now please excuse me while I down this beer right quick.

I soooo dread this talk. I want my baby to stay a baby. I only have 7 – 9 years to freak out over it. (ohmygod that just made it worse. less than ten years. fuck me) I hope I figure out what to say by then. I just hope I handle it better than my mom did.

Good for you! You will both be glad in a few years that you had this talk young. The only real thing I knew about getting a period when I was a young girl was that I would bleed, and I don’t think I really knew why for years ( I was 11 when I started ). All I knew was now I could have babies, but I had not idea how they got there. The only think I was told about sex was not to let a man put his “thing” inside me. Sad but true. I was a teen and learned somethings from friends, some from the boys (like what a thing was….giggle)

I’m so proud of you Cece. It is much better to hear it from someone you can trust instead of another little girl that doesn’t know.
Cheers! (holding up my glass of wine)

Thanks, Ang!
Dixie, it IS fricken scary thinking about this. Knowing that my baby is a tween now! Oy.
Beth, I got out of there before she could ask me about babies. LMAO I heard the nerves in my voice as it is.
Autumn, I don’t think my mom ever discussed sex w/us. I learned from my friends & my 19 year old boyfriend. Ugh.
Carrie, I’m glad I did it, too. She came up to me last night, out of the blues, and asked me another “period” question. lol I’m glad she’s comfortable. She’s going to be the girl in the group of friends who educate the others. lol

Yay for taking the time to do it right instead of letting her find out from someone else or have misinformation. I could totally see her being the one to help educate others.
And yeah, that pool party thing? It actually happened to a friend of mine in sixth grade. Oy vey!! And of course the pool party was at a boy’s house. Our options were limited. I’m sure she’s scarred for life from it! : )

OMG THE TALK! It sounds like you did an excellent job! But just think, it was probably 100 times more embarrassing for her, even if she took is well and all. Remembering actually being that age makes me cringe! Being a girl is HARD!

as The Dad, i stayed out of this topic, and let Mom handle it. but she kept me informed of everything as it happened/was happening.
as it turned out, she had her first period at my house one weekend (he Mom and I had split by then) she was 13. she didnt say anything to me, but i saw the residue on the toilet seat. the Girl knew what is was and took care of her situation herself. her Mom had done her job well, and Girl was prepared.
i quickly went into the back room and called Mom to tell her. She started crying. (well, i was a little choked up,as well). our girl was growing up. and it sucked.

I’m letting Madison shave her legs this spring. I didnt want her to be the only girl in middle school that had not done it. But she is blond….makes a difference.

Yay… See, that was not so hard, and that is awesome that she came back later with more questions… My mother did such a horrible job with this topic, that I was scared everytime she said we needed to talk, after that.
